Globalization Op-Ed
For this project we chose a topic related to globalization. Once we had a topic we were asked to write an op-ed (opinion editorial) about our views on this topic, whether it had a positive or negative affect on our current society. The topic I chose was over consumption and how it plays a major role in climate change and the obesity epidemic. My fellow classmates and spent a few weeks researching our topic and then we began writing our op-ed. After we finished our final draft we created a political cartoon linking to what we wrote in our op-ed.
When I started this project I had a pretty clear understanding of what overconsumption was but I didn't really understand how much is was affecting our world. Not only that, but I have also learned to control myself when it comes to purchasing items. I definitely over consumed throughout my life by buying many things that I did not need but I now feel confident that I can do my part by controlling how I consume.
This writing process has definitely helped me improve my writing and revision skills. When we turned in our second draft to Ally she made a ton of suggestions and it was very overwhelming at first. As I read through them they really helped me improve my piece. I now look through my work in order to find anything that I could increase the quality. Also, this project helped me put my ideas on paper without making it too long. There was a word limit (1000 words) and that didn't seem like enough at first so I really had to pick and choose what I wanted to talk about in my paper. Over all, this project has increased my writing skills and I'm excited to see how I can take what I learned and use it in future projects.
I really enjoyed creating the political cartoon and it really improved my artistic ability. I never really I saw myself as a good drawer but I'm very proud of my final piece and I personally think it looks really good. Also, I have learned a lot about making a political cartoon and how to convey your message in a creative way by using labels and symbols in your final piece. Now when I look at other political cartoons I look for these tin details in order to get a better understanding of the bigger picture.
